Larry ‘Shorty’ Kay

Larry “Shorty” Kay, 76, of Charles City, passed away Monday, Dec. 14, 2015 at the Floyd County Medical Center in Charles City. According to Larry’s wishes, he will be cremated and a celebration of life will be held at a later date in January 2016.

Larry Kay, the son of Chauncey and Mercedes (Warrington) Kay, was born on Oct. 27, 1939 in Charles City. He graduated from Charles City High School in 1959. Shorty married his high school sweetheart, Peggy Schmidt, in 1960 in Charles City. He devoted 32 years of his life as a Machine Operator for White Farm. When the company closed he began doing maintenance work at Chautauqua Guest Homes. Shorty was a fun loving guy with a sense of humor. Every morning Shorty would meet up and play Euchre with his friends and later in the day would play Cribbage with his wife. Shorty and Peggy spent their summers in Lansing, fishing on the Mississippi River and enjoying their family and friends. Shorty loved to spend time with his grandchildren.

Living family members include his wife, Peggy Kay of Charles City; two children: Kevin (Kelli) Kay of Sacramento, Calif. and Kelly (Adam) Wolf of Cedar Falls; six grandchildren: Andy (Kate) Kay, Derek Czajka and Nicole Kay of California, Amanda, Rachel and Noah Wolf of Iowa; two great grandchildren: Olivia and Avery Kay of California; three sisters: Sandy (Gary) Woodworth, Susan Gruver and Sharon Kline of Iowa.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Chauncey and Mercedes Kay; and four siblings: Maureen Sciortino, Gary Kay, Chauncey Kay, Jr. and Faith Starbuck.
