Donald ‘Don’ ‘Donnie’ John Roths

170918_J_Roths DonaldDonald “Don” “Donnie” John Roths, 85, of Charles City, IA died Tuesday, September 12, 2017 at Floyd County Memorial Hospital.

A visitation will be held from 4-6 pm with a 5:30 pm Rosary/Scripture Service on Sunday, September 17, 2017 at Fullerton Funeral Home, 401 Blunt Street, Charles City.  A funeral service will be held at 10:30 am on Monday, September 18, 2017 at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church with Father Gary Mayer officiating.  A private family burial will take place at a later date.

Don was born on November 5, 1931 in New Hampton, IA to Arthur and Martha (Hugebach) Roths.  He grew up in Ionia, IA, attending school there until he graduated high school.  On October 30, 1952, Don was united in marriage to Carolyn Smith at I.C. Church.  From 1952-1956, Don was enlisted in the United States Air Force.  He was stationed in Rantoul, IL and Tuscon, AZ.  After Don was honorably discharged in 1956, he enrolled in Linotype School, where he learned how to type for newspaper layouts.  He worked in Belvedere, IL and McHenry, IL as a printer for a total of about 10 years, then moved back to Charles City and worked for 17 years at the Charles City Press.  In 1972, Don and his family bought a farm East of Charles City that they called “the pet rock farm” and he raised hogs.  Don also sold insurance for New York Life and Illinois Mutual for a period of time, before returning to the printing business in Riceville, Waverly, Cresco and New Hampton communities.  Last but not least, he owned his own printing business in Charles City called Country Printers.

Throughout his life he enjoyed softball, baseball and football.  Don liked playing games on his tablet and was an avid solitaire/card player.  In his younger years he would go bowling or roller skating with Carolyn.  He took great pride in being a foster grandparent.

Those left to cherish his memory include his wife of almost 65 years, Carolyn; children: Martha (Randy) Brunner, David (Lori Webster) Roths, Jennifer (Kurt) Burton and John (Alysia Hulbert) Roths; daughter-in-law, Connie Roths; sister, Marlys (Dale) Mondt; grandchildren: Stacy, Ian, Ryan, Tamarra, Rich, Kyia, Kinley and Kyler and 8 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his son, Steven Roths; grandson, Rory Brunner and parents, Arthur and Martha Roths.
