Growing up, he attended grade school and high school at Sheffield-Chapin-Meservey-Thornton. He graduated from S.C.M.T. in 1964.

Gary enlisted in the United States Army to serve his country. He served during Vietnam and was later honorably discharged.

Gary was active in the Sioux Rapids and Rembrandt communities. He was a member of the Sioux Rapids American Legion, Loyal Order of Moose, was a volunteer firefighter for Rembrandt, and played Santa in the city of Rembrandt.

In his free time Gary enjoyed playing golf, cribbage, going on family vacations, and watching sports (especially the Iowa Hawkeyes and Minnesota Vikings). He never missed an opportunity to attend and cheer on the grandkids at all their activities.
