Mecindo Salinas

Mecindo Salinas, Sr., 91, of Charles City, passed away Thursday, Dec. 3, 2020 at home, surrounded by his children and other family members by his side.

A funeral Mass for immediate family will be held at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Charles City and will be live streamed on the Hauser Weishaar Funeral Home Facebook page at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 9, 2020. Reverend Tom Heathershaw will celebrate the Mass. Burial will be at Calvary Cemetery in Charles City.

Mecindo Salinas, Sr., the son of GuMecindo and Delfina (Ramos) Salinas, was born Jan. 1, 1929 in San Antonio, Texas. He was a migrant worker throughout the United States. Mecindo was united in marriage to Concepcion Alvarado on June 16, 1955 in Albert Lea, Minnesota. In 1960, the couple settled in Iowa to raise their family of nine children.

Mecindo worked at Sherman Nursery in Charles City for over 20 years. He was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Charles City. Mecindo enjoyed playing cards, going to the casino with his sons, fishing and cooking for family. He made the best tortillas. He liked listening to Mexican music and dancing to it as well. He was a self-taught barber. He loved spending time with his family and they will all miss him very much.

Living family members include his eight children: Rogelio Salinas of Charles City, Rey Salinas of Charles City, Jesusita “Susie” Smith of Charles City, Dalia Weber of Charles City, Rosalinda (Rick) Bormann of Ionia, Alma (Tim) Hackbart of Ankeny, Juan Salinas of Charles City and Santos (Brandy) Salinas of Charles City; 21 grandchildren: Delfina Stanfill, Joseph Salinas, Cameron Cronin, Nathon Salinas, Haley Oh, Isaia Weber, Kari Jim, Zackaria Weber, Kory Bormann, Brock Bormann, Stephanie Pauley, Ashley Salinas, Eric Salinas, Tyler Salinas, Nicholas Salinas, Christina McCleary, Samuel Hackbart, Noah Hackbart, Nyssa Salinas, Albi Salinas and Emra Salinas; numerous great-grandchildren; along with several nieces, nephews other family members and friends.

Mecindo was preceded in death by his wife, Concepcion; son, Mecindo Jr; grandson, Trent Smith; his parents, GuMecindo and Delfina Salinas; three brothers: Santos, Ricardo and Lucio;  and four sisters: Antonia, Esperanza, Anita and Julia.
