Marjorie Evelyn Baker

Marjorie Evelyn Baker, Fletcher, Roberts died on Dec. 16, 2020. She was born April 22, 1925 in Sioux Falls, S.D. the daughter of Wesley G. and Flossie Kinsey Baker. Marjorie grew up in Sioux Falls, South Dakota and graduated from Washington High School in 1943, attended Cornell College two years and graduated from the University of S.D. in 1947. While at the University, she met a law student, William R. Fletcher on a blind date. They were married June 3, 1948 and to that union two children were born – Fredrick R. Fletcher and Jacquelin K. Fletcher. Bill was recalled to active duty during the Korean conflict and was killed Jan. 5, 1952 in Margate, England, as a result of an aircraft accident. Marge, Fred and Jacque lived in Sioux Falls for five years.

On June 23, 1957 Marge married Harry W. Roberts Jr., a long-time friend, and the family moved to Charles City, Iowa, where they lived the rest of their lives. She worked 20 years for the Iowa

Department of Human Services. During this time, she initiated the homemaker – health-aide program, but mainly worked in the child welfare field. In retirement, she was active in her church and enjoyed bridge, reading, walking, traveling and especially loved being with her children and grandchildren. Harry and Marge traveled extensively in the U.S. and overseas and celebrated Marge’s 80th birthday in Japan and China. Harry died April 30, 2007.

She is survived by her son, Fredrick R. Fletcher, his wife Shelley Smith-Fletcher and their children Max Wesley Fletcher and Madeline Yoo Fletcher of Winona, MN. Also surviving is her daughter, Jacquelin K. Fletcher and her sons Benjamin Fletcher Brown and Nathanial Fletcher Brown of Des Moines. A sister-in-law Jeanne Travis, Milford, Iowa, also survives.

She was preceded in death by her husbands and their parents, her parents and her son-in-law, Michael L. Brown and Harry’s two sisters. Memorials may be directed to the Charles City Public Library, Trinity Methodist Church or an organization of your choice.

There will be a private service with burial in Woodlawn Cemetery in Sioux Falls, S.D.
