Donald August Michaelis

Born in Charles City Sept. 16, 1926; deceased Dec. 26, 2020, age 94.

Predeceased by parents Otto and Juliette Michaelis, wife Akemi Fumiko Michaelis and three brothers and three sisters.

Survived by daughter Darlys and son-in-law Wally Bradford, Dallas, and many nephews and nieces.

Don was drafted out of Charles City High School on Jan. 9, 1944. He served in the U.S Army occupation forces of Japan and after discharge, worked at the Gamble Store. Don re-enlisted and served as First Sergeant at the Tokyo Ordnance Depot during the Korean War. Staying in Asia, Don worked as a civilian for the Army and Air Force Exchange Service.

In 1956 he married Akemi then managed Base Exchanges in Asia and the United States. In 1968 he volunteered and managed the Cam Rahn Bay Vietnam Exchange, separated from his family for 12 months.

He retired in 1976, and was a resident of Clearwater, Florida, and Dallas, Texas.

A kind man and loving father, Don was an expert in Asian American Cultural Exchange and with Akemi a collector of Asian art.
