Gordon Mead

Gordon “Gordy” Mead, 57, of Charles City, passed away Monday, July 5, 2021 at the University of Iowa Hospital in Iowa City.

A gathering of family and friends will be held from 1-3 p.m. on Saturday, July 24, 2021 at Hauser Weishaar Funeral Home in Charles City.

Gordon Joe Mead, the son of Rich and Betty (Lence) Mead, was born June 29, 1964. He received his education in Charles City, graduating from Charles City High School in 1982.  While in high school, Gordy was a varsity member of the Comet’s diving team.

Gordy was a waiter at Uptown Café, cooked and waited tables at Highway Café, worked for Gil White for a few years and worked for the Iowa DOT for about 10 years. He loved working on his house and cars on the side. Gordy sand-blasted, painted and fixed cars for many years.

Gordy’s grandparents owned Mead’s Bait Shop and he helped them out quite often. When his grandparents passed away, Gordy purchased their land and the bait shop keeping it operational for about five more years.

Gordy was a selfless man who thought of others way before himself. He was always ready to lend a helping hand whenever needed. Gordy had a strong will, stubborn personality and was a very hard worker. His memory was like an elephant and he could remember a lot of details throughout his life which is why he loved to tell stories.

Gordy was a member of the Keg Masters. He enjoyed hunting, trapping, fishing, seining, snowmobiling and sledding (pretty much anything outdoors). His most treasured memories were times spent with his family and close friends.

Living family members include his significant other, Valerie Bartimoccia; son, Alex Mead; siblings:  Daniel Mead, Chris Mead, Angie (Travis) Sailor and Geri Mead; nieces and nephews: Jamie Mead, Brady Tonelli, Faith Sailor, Ashley Mead, Maci Mead and Clayton Mead; step-mother, Linda Mead; along with other family members and friends.

Gordy was preceded in death by his grandparents, Gordon and Harriet Mead; mother, Betty Schwab; father, Rich Mead; step-father, Chuck Schwab; grandmother, Bernadine Tjaden; and grandfather, Robert Lence.
