HiJoe was born to Hiram and Edna (Griffin) Putney on Dec. 13, 1939, in Charles City, Iowa. He graduated from Immaculate Conception School in 1957. HiJoe was united in marriage to Judy Mohring on Oct. 8, 1960 at Immaculate Conception Church in Charles City.

He was a letter carrier at the Charles City post office for 32 years. He was happy to be able to carry his home route the last 14 years on the job. After retiring in January 1995 he and Judy spent their first month in Florida and spent their first full winter in Texas. They spent one more winter in Florida before deciding Texas was the place they wanted to be. In 2001 they took an extended trip to Alaska traveling in their Roadtrek with friends from Texas. They enjoyed Square and Round dancing and HiJoe was an excellent dancer, the grandchildren liked to watch them dance. They traveled to several ballparks to watch Atlanta Braves games during the summer as well as coming back to Iowa to visit family and friends.

HiJoe was an avid bowler, he definitely passed down his love for the sport to his children and grandchildren. He loved watching the Iowa Hawkeyes football and basketball games. An especially big highlight in his life was seeing his grandchildren playing sports. He built each family a swing set and even built a doll bed for a granddaughter. He was always ready to do any jobs the family asked of him. He was a measure twice, cut once guy and always checked for level. He enjoyed making macramé chairs, footstools and doing puzzles… he even framed a few of them.

HiJoe is survived by his wife, Judy; their children Andrea (Joe) Pratt of Des Moines, Brian (Vicki) Putney of St. Ansgar, Colleen (Paul) Kirk of Des Moines, Darin (Brenda) Putney of Carroll; 11 grandchildren: Melissa Putney, Rachel (Rusty) Rhamy, Tanner Putney, Kaitlyn (Joe) Williamson, Joseph Pratt, Susan Pratt, Sam (Kristen Scott) Kirk, Jane Kirk, Tyler Putney, Jordyn Putney, Carter Putney; Three great grandchildren: Twins Henrick and Harrison Williamson; and Liam Rhamy. Brother Vince (Ginger) Putney of Newnan, GA; sister, Rose Becker of Casselberry, FL; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Hiram and Edna; his brothers, Richard, Alfred, LeRoy, Edward; and a sister Ruth.

A Funeral Mass will be held at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Charles City. Saturday, April 2 at 10:30 a.m. with visitation and luncheon following. Inurnment of the cremains will be at a later date in Calvary Cemetery in Charles City.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Hiram J. (HiJoe) Putney memorial fund or the St. Anthony Regional Cancer Center in memory of Hiram J. (HiJoe) Putney.
