Memorials are suggested to be directed towards Living Beyond Breast Cancer which helps patients who have been diagnosed with breast cancer connect to trusted information and support. Janice was a survivor of breast cancer and often spoke highly of the guidance she received early in her diagnosis. Janice often would befriend strangers when her husband was in the hospital. If they were in need she would help in any way possible, taking them to dinner, buying them warm clothes for the Minnesota winter, or just spending time with them listening to their stories. She helped many people in this way.

Janice Helene Patten was born Aug. 20, 1935, in Charles City, Iowa; the daughter of Charles and Florence (Ersing) Patten. Janice received her education from Charles City High School, later briefly attending the University of Idaho in Moscow, Idaho. Janice worked for Northwestern Bell Telephone until her retirement.

Janice enjoyed traveling and often spoke of her many trips across the United States with her family. After the loss of her husband she continued to travel and enjoy many trips with First Citizens Bank and CUSB Bank. These trips included several theater productions, concerts, mystery trips, a trip to Hawaii and even a cruise to Alaska. Janice had never flown in an airplane and was amazed at how it stayed in the air and how things looked from so high. Janice spent several weekends shopping. She could often be found with one of children or grandchildren in the stores with bags full of items. Janice loved to find good deals. Family holidays and events occurred frequently at Janice’s home. Meals were always accompanied by Janice’s favorite family activity, cards. Children were taught how to play at a young age and always were welcome to join in the fun.

Left to cherish her memory are her children Rebecca (Brian) Stogdill, Amy (Sarah) Monson; grandchildren Mikkyahaila (Ashley) Stogdill, Noël Christley, and Lynnea Lehmeier; great-grandchildren Remmington, Bryleigh, Isaiah, Emmett; brother Kenneth (Joyce) Patten and brother in law Charles Kraut; along with several nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.

Janice is preceded in death by her parents Charles and Florence (Ersing) Patten; husband Arlen (Pete) Monson; siblings Jean Veigel, Betty Patten, Ruth Demro, Patricia Suarez, Mary Fisher, Joan Patten, Robert Patten, Wendell Patten and Katherine Kraut; brothers-in-law, Carleton Veigel, Ronnie Demro, and James Fisher.
