Jim was born on May 5, 1941, in Venus, California, to Norville and Elizabeth (Weaver) DeVore. He earned his Bachelor’s Degree at Wartburg College in Waverly. On Oct. 8, 1966, he was united in marriage to Andrea Rae (Bartman) DeVore. The couple resided in Charles City their entire life and had two children. They were married for over 50 years until Andrea’s passing in 2016.

He didn’t like to talk about it, but Jim was a proud United States Army Veteran and spent time stationed in Turkey. He valued duty, honor, and country. After being honorably discharged, he began working as a chemist for Cambrex (formerly known as Salisbury Chemicals, Solvay Animal Health, and Cambrex). Jim was extremely thorough when it came to his work and was known as the go-to person if there was ever an emergency in the lab. He took a very methodical approach to his work; he was a very analytical person. Although Jim was a quiet man, he was also very firm in his convictions and beliefs.

Outside of work, Jim, in his younger years, enjoyed fixing up homes with his boys. He was an avid bowler and participated in a Thursday night bowling league, and was an avid vegetable and flower gardener. He was a leader with the Charles City Elks Lodge and served the Lodge as a past exalted ruler. Jim collected stamps for the majority of his life and later began collecting coins after inheriting his father-in-law’s collection. He enjoyed going to auctions and loved cooking with his family. His cooking usually revolved around more complex and intricate recipes, and he always made the same Christmas cookies every year that included several layers.

Above all else, Jim adored his two sons and grandchildren. He was very involved in their lives and made sure to always check up on how everyone was doing. Jim often picked up the grandkids from school and attended their events and activities. His legacy will continue to live on in his family with the love and lessons he instilled.

Those left to cherish his memory include his son, Kurt M.J. (Gretchen) DeVore of Lone Tree, IA, and their children: Timothy A.K., Michael A.K., Zachary C.K., Maxwell B.K., and Joseph G.K.; and son, Justin M.T. (Marcia) DeVore of Charles City, IA and their children: Hannah R.C. and Jonah D.J; sister, Rosalie Hagarty, and brothers, Steve (Dorthea) DeVore, and David (Marcia) DeVore.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Andrea DeVore; parents, Norville and Elizabeth DeVore; sister, Phyllis Guilsdorf and brother-in-law, Paul Hagarty.
