Nadine Kay West

Nadine West passed away Sunday, Jan. 15, 2023 at the Good Samaritan Center in West Union  at the age of 77.

Nadine was born April 4, 1945 in Volga, Iowa to Charles H. (Bud) and Marjorie C. Upton. Nadine was the second oldest of 10 children born to Bud and Marjorie. Nadine attended school at Volga, Arlington and later graduated from Valley High School in 1963.

She was united in marriage to Russell West on June 1, 1963. To this union four children were born, Lisa, Bert, Lee and Lonnie. Russ and Nadine farmed outside of Elgin for many years until moving to town.

In 1985, Nadine went from farm hand to working for the state of Iowa’s, Historic Montauk in Clermont where she worked for 25 years as site manager. She loved her work at Montauk and was proud to work for the state of Iowa and gained lifelong friendships from her career. She retired from Montauk in 2010. After her retirement she worked at Froelich Tractor Museum part time and enjoyed part time cleaning jobs to keep herself busy. Nadine loved her family, and cherished spending time with them. She especially enjoyed family nights with her siblings, dancing, the Elgin Coffee ladies clutch, her Highland Lutheran church family, garage sales, going on excursions with her girlfriends, family campouts and was a nature lover, which included walking the various area trails. She enjoyed taking grandkids to the area parks and drives out into the country.

Surviving are her four children: Lisa Wescott, West Union; Bert (Brenda) West, Lodi, WI;  Lee (Karen) West, Clermont, and Lonnie (Brenda) West, Charles City; nine grandchildren, Max (Haley) Wescott, Grant Wescott, Hailey West, Collin West, Connor (Bailey) West, Carter West, Logan West, Lexi West (Isaiah Ruckdashel) and Lynzee West and two great grandchildren, Ayden Wescott and Caleb West, six brothers and sisters: Ronald (Linda) Upton, Mike (Lynn ) Upton, Leslie (Clair) Upton, Karen (Doug) Guyer, Kenneth (Barb) Upton and Connie Lauer along with many nieces and nephews.

Nadine was preceded in death by her parents, Charles and Marjorie Upton, sister June Upton, and brothers, Gene and Bill and brother-in-law, Randy Lauer and her ex-husband, Russell West.

Visitation will be held from 2-6 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 29 at Elgin Lutheran Church, Elgin, Iowa. There will also be a one hour visitation before services at Highland Lutheran Church, Elkader, Iowa on Monday.

Funeral Service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, Jan. 30, 2023 at Highland Lutheran Church, Elkader, Iowa. Lunch will follow at Elgin Lutheran Church.
