Marilyn McInroy-Nettleton
Marilyn McInroy-Nettleton, 93, of Greene, passed away Saturday, Sept. 16, 2023, in Clarksville. A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. with an hour prior visitation on Friday, Sept. 22, 2023, at the Greene Community Center, 202 W South St, Greene with Erik Hoefer officiating. Burial will follow at the Riverside Cemetery in Riceville. Woodley Funeral Home of Greene is caring for Marilyn and her family.

Marilyn was born on April 1, 1930, in Sheffield, IA to Roy Albert Alden and Lottie “Claire” (Walker) Alden. She was raised in Riceville and attended McIntire schools, where she was a star basketball player and made All State as a guard. Marilyn was a hard worker, and she began working at the young age of 11, with helping out on a neighbor’s family farm. She carried her strong work ethic throughout her life. Marilyn was united in marriage on Oct. 8, 1947, to Lenard “Mac” McInroy, the couple later divorced. She was then united in marriage to James “Jim” Nettleton on June 17, 2000 until his passing in 2014. Marilyn and Lenard had 15 children together and their family resided in Charles City. Marilyn was a mother first and foremost and raised all of her children plus helped babysitting her grandchildren. Marilyn was welcoming to all children and felt like there was always room for more. She also worked as a custodian for many years for the Charles City School District. Besides being a full-time mother and working at the school, she also cleaned homes for various families as a side business.
Marilyn loved helping out on the family’s acreage that was north of Charles City. She loved all kinds of animals and caring for them. She had a special feral cat named Spot that she rescued and raised. Her hobbies included: vegetable and flower gardening, canning and sewing. She was an excellent seamstress and did some upholstery. Marilyn had a feminine touch; she like decorating, antiques and anything with lace. She was an avid card player and belonged to several card clubs where she played Canasta and 500. She also enjoyed playing BINGO; she was very competitive. Marilyn was known for her cinnamon twists that sold out at the school bake sales. She did a lot of cooking and baking; especially for her family and knew how to feed a crowd. Marilyn liked taking trips to the casino with her family. In her younger years, Marilyn and her husband Lenard would go dancing at the Surf Ballroom in Clear Lake. She loved tap dancing, polka dancing and the jitterbug. Marilyn’s family was of the upmost importance to her, and she loved caring for them. Marilyn had a very strong faith and was a member of the St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Greene but also frequently helped out at the Roseville church.
Those left to cherish her memory include her children: Bruce (Randy) McInroy, Becky (Jeff) West, Vida Ott, Don (Deb) McInroy, Doug (Kim) McInroy, Sheila (Joe) DeMarco, Terry (Cindy) McInroy, Ron (Amy) McInroy, Betty (Mike) Hostetler, Phillip McInroy, Laurie (Michelle) McInroy, Connie (Todd) Nelson, Liz (Scott) McInroy and Jason McInroy; daughter-in-law, Mary McInroy; many beloved grandchildren and great-grandchildren; siblings: Larry (Karen) Alden, Gary (Delores) Alden and Bonnie (Jim) Hubka and good friend, Dean.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, Lenard “Mac” McInroy; second husband, James “Jim” Nettleton; son, Scott McInroy; granddaughters: Leah Renae Holtz, Darci Lynn McInroy and Nicole McInroy and seven siblings.
