Ruth Lavonne was born Aug. 14,1929 in Waverly. The daughter of Henry and Nora (Brandt) Eggena. She grew up on a farm near Denver, Iowa.

Ruth was united in marriage to Ervin Farmer on Feb. 19, 1950. Together, they made their home and farmed north of Charles City, near Colwell, as they raised their six children. Ervin passed away in June of 1994, but Ruth remained on the farm until January of 2023.

Ruth loved to work with her hands. Anyone who knew her has probably received one of her many projects. Whether it was a craft item, an apron, curtains, table runners, bags or the latest sewing fad, she would make it. Her passion was making quilts. She began making quilts for dialysis patients in Rochester, when her husband would get cold through treatments. That led to making sure dialysis patients from here to Iowa City were warm. Eventually she began providing quilts and pillowcases for the Children’s Hospital. If she wasn’t sewing, she was outside tending to her lawn, garden, flowers or a small apple orchard. She produced enough apples to keep her family supplied with cider and applesauce every year.

Ruth was also active in many community and charitable organizations throughout Floyd County. Whether it was her church, the 4 H and FFA groups her kids grew up in, the Colwell Community Center, Culture Club, or Floyd County Foundation, just to name a few. Her generosity to multiple organizations will be remembered by many, as she was proud of the community, she lived in for over 70 years.

Ruth is survived by her children: Steven (Grace) Farmer of Charles City, Judie (Jim) Raymond of Cedar Falls, Janine (John) Schwarck of Riceville, Brian (Theresa) Farmer of Orchard, and Darrin (Rachel) Farmer of Lansing, Kansas.

Grandchildren; Jennifer (Sean) Wallerich, Elizabeth (Adam) Nieman, Jeanne (Dustin) Mentel, Joanie (Chris) Miller, Jordan (Kristin) Schwarck, Tyler (Michelle) Schwarck, Lindsey (Jared) Foss, Dan Farmer, Brad (Kelci) Farmer, Emily Farmer, Samantha (Daniel) Coffey, Daughter in law Tracie Farmer, Step-grandchildren Alex (Andrea) Heitz, Cody Wilson, brother Alvin (Dorothy) Eggena, many great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Ruth was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Ervin Farmer, her son Alan Farmer, Granddaughter Stephanie Farmer and great grandson Henry Farmer, her sister Evelyn Reusch and brother-in-law Robert Reusch.
