Steven David Simerson, Loving Husband, Father, and Community Servant

Steven David Simerson, 76, of Charles City, passed away peacefully on Friday, Feb. 16, 2024, surrounded by his loving family.

Born July 2, 1947, in Charles City, Iowa, Steve was a proud son of Harold and Marjorie Simerson (predeceased). He was proud of his hometown roots and his love of trains. He graduated from Boone High School in 1965, and shared a lifelong connection with his sisters, Susan Paris and Mary Baker.

Driven by a sense of service, Steve enlisted in the U.S. Navy, dedicating himself as a Radio Control Man during the Vietnam War. After returning home, he found his forever partner, Nancy Jean Tefft, while working for the Iowa Highway Commission. In 1973, they sealed their love at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, celebrating their 50th anniversary just last year.

Together, they built a beautiful life in Charles City, raising their son, Jeremey John Simerson (wife, Jamie, and daughters, Jaylyn and Jovie of Osage, Iowa) and daughter, Stacie Jo Simerson Merta (partner, Joe Hilgendorf, and grandchildren, Avery Carol and Aiden Zephyr of Cedar Rapids, Iowa). Steve took immense pride in his career as the water superintendent for the Charles City Municipal Water Treatment Plant, ensuring the community’s health and safety.

Steve cherished his family fiercely. He was a devoted husband, a supportive father, and an adoring grandfather who reveled in every moment with his loved ones.

During his final year, Steve bravely battled for his health. The family extends their deepest gratitude to his brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Dennis and Mary Jane Ross, for their unwavering friendship and support throughout this challenging time.

Steve leaves behind a legacy of love, dedication, and service. He will be deeply missed by his wife, Nancy, children: Jeremey and Stacie, grandchildren: Avery, Aiden, Jaylyn, and Jovie, sisters: Susan and Mary, and countless friends and extended family.

Memorial arrangements are pending. The family will be hosting a celebration of life later this spring.
