Dorothy Meineke

Dorothy Meineke, 98, of Charles City, passed away on Wednesday, May 29, 2024, at 11th Street Chautauqua Guest Home in Charles City.

A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, June 6, 2024, at Messiah Lutheran Church in Charles City with Erik Hoefer officiating. Burial will follow at Riverside Cemetery in Charles City.

A visitation will be held from 9:30a.m. until the start of the service on Thursday at Messiah Lutheran Church.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Naomi Circle at Messiah Lutheran Church.

Dorothy Mae Meineke, the daughter of Donald and Eunice (Barrett) Knapp, was born on Oct. 30, 1925, in Bassett, Iowa. She was raised by her grandparents, Julia and Willard Barrett, along with her siblings, Bud and Betty. She attended country school on Highway 63 and then school in Charles City. Dorothy was united in marriage to Donald William Meineke on June 21, 1947, in Charles City. On Sept. 12, 1969, they were blessed with their only child, Tammy, the light of their life.

Dorothy worked for Woolworths in Charles City and Charles City Bottling Company. She also had an in-home daycare and babysat for many families. Dorothy was a member of Messiah Lutheran Church and belonged to the Naomi Circle. She was an avid reader and enjoyed doing word search puzzles, watching TV (especially sports and horse races), taking naps, and supporting the Charles City Comets. In her younger years, she enjoyed taking bus trips and fishing with her husband. Dorothy also loved visiting with her family, friends, and her fellow church ladies.

She is survived by many of her nieces and nephews and their families.

She was preceded in death by her grandparents, Julia and Willard Barrett; parents, Donald and Eunice Knapp; husband, Donald Meineke; daughter, Tamara “Tammy” Elliott; son-in-law, Randy Elliott; siblings, Betty Knapp Barrett and Leland “Bud” Knapp; and half-siblings: Beverly Nikolas, Bob Meighan, Roger Meighan, Tom Meighan, and Connie Kinsel.
