David Lewis Crandall

David Lewis Crandall, 78, of Ionia passed away on May 19, 2024, at Mercy One, Mason City. He attended Bassett School until it closed, graduating from Charles City in 1963. Dave proudly served in the US Air Force 1964-1968.

Dave was known for his career as an electrician and as the owner of Chickasaw Trenching and Electric. He also delivered Sunday newspapers and supervised crews laying fiber optic cable across the state of Iowa. He was a proud groundskeeper for the Mount Carroll Cemetery until health issues prevented him from continuing.

As mischievous as a “Bassett Boy” could be, Dave may have participated in the shenanigans still talked about today. Dave was known for his sober expression that amplified his witty comments. This was captured in the poems he scribed for many people for many occasions. He enjoyed traveling, whether Amtrak, bus trips, or car trips. His latest passion was touring the Freedom Rocks of Iowa. Dave enjoyed visiting with family, friends and neighbors.

David is survived by his wife, Jeanie (Foxen), sons Andy of Des Moines, Eric (Amber) of Waterloo, daughter Kathy Girkin (Scott) of Ionia, son-in-law Justin Quigley of Kirksville, Montana, and eight grandchildren. He is also survived by sisters Cheryl Lair, Terri (Bob) Snyder of Charles City and Leanne (Dave) Leeper, Cedar Rapids, along with aunts Marilou Dautant, Texas, and Phyllis Gable, Rockford, Iowa. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Sara Quigley, parents Ralph and Wilma Crandall, brother Roger, and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.

A Celebration of Life will be held Saturday, June 15, 2024, at the Community Center (formerly the Senior Center), Charles City, from 1-4 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be given to a charity of your choice.
