Geneva ‘Genni’ Mae McComb Smith

Geneva “Genni” Mae McComb Smith, age 83, passed away peacefully in her sleep at 8:10 a.m. on May 1, 2025.

Born in Oelwein, Iowa, to Harley and Ruth (Fordyce) McComb on April 13, 1942, Genni grew up in northeast Iowa and attended school in Randalia, Greene, Shell Rock, and Finchford. She graduated from West Central High School in Maynard in 1959.

Genni pursued her passion for education at Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls (now the University of Northern Iowa), graduating in 1963. She began her teaching career shortly after, lovingly guiding kindergarten students in Charles City, Iowa.

On June 20, 1964, Genni married the love of her life, Robert L. Smith, in Randalia, Iowa. Together, they made their home in Charles City, where they raised their family and shared a life of faith, service, and joy.

Genni dedicated 39 years to teaching, touching the lives of countless children. She loved traveling with her husband and being involved in the lives of her sons and grandchildren.

She is survived by her son Chris (Ellen) Smith of Advance, North Carolina, and granddaughters Olivia and Keira; and her son Dan (Kelsey) Smith of Kalamazoo, Michigan, along with granddaughters Harper and Gracelyn and grandson Oliver.

A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, May 23, 2025, at Trinity United Methodist Church in Charles City with Pastor Don Preston officiating. A lunch and dessert reception will follow the service.

A gathering of family and friends will be held from 5-7 p.m. on Thursday, May 22, 2025, at Hauser Weishaar Funeral Home in Charles City and continue one hour prior to the service at the church on Friday.

Genni will be remembered as a devoted wife, loving mother and grandmother, passionate educator, and faithful friend. Her warmth, wisdom, and kindness will live on in the many lives she touched.
