Victor ‘Vic’ Dunn, Jr.

Victor “Vic” Dunn, Jr., 80, of Charles City, passed away Wednesday, May 21, 2025, at the Floyd County Medical Center in Charles City.

A Mass of Christian Burial for Vic Dunn will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, May 30, 2025, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Charles City with Reverend Tom Heathershaw officiating. Burial will be at Calvary Cemetery in Charles City.

Visitation will be from 5-8 p.m. Thursday, May 29, 2025, at Hauser Weishaar Funeral Home in Charles City where a Rosary will be prayed at 4:30 p.m. Visitation will continue one hour before the service at the church on Friday. In lieu of flowers the family suggests that memorials be given to the Charles City High School Booster Club, Charles City Police Department, and/or AMR in Charles City.

Victor “Vic” Franklin Dunn, Jr. was born on Dec. 20,1944, at Floyd County Memorial Hospital in Charles City, Iowa. Vic graduated from St. Williams High School in Alta Vista, Iowa in 1962. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1962 and advanced to Petty Officer 3rd class in the Administration and Clerical field (Yeoman) for the Commander In Chief, US Pacific Fleet. He was honorably discharged in 1966. Vic was a Vietnam Veteran. He received the Vietnam Service Medal, Navy Expeditionary Medal, and National Defense Service Medal. He served on the USS Bellatrix AF62 for 18 months.

Vic joined the Charles City Police Department on Aug. 1, 1966. Vic retired from the Charles City Police Department on Dec. 21, 1999, after 33 years of service to the community. Vic received many awards including the Certificate of Commendation by the Iowa Civil Defense Division for Meritorious Service to the people of Charles City during and after the tornado of May 15, 1968, Outstanding Young Law Enforcement Officer by Charles City Jaycees, and Iowa Jaycees 1974.

Vic was a former member of the Immaculate Conception School Board, President of the Charles City Jaycees, Coach and Assistant coach for boys little league, President of the Charles City Policeman’s Association, and toastmaster. He was currently a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Iowa State Policeman’s Association, American Legion Post 174, Charles City and US Jaycees, Jaycees International Senate, Catholic Order of Foresters, Veterans of Vietnam War, Inc., VFW Post 3914, and YMCA.

Vic married Joan (Conrad) on July 24, 1965, at Makalapa Chapel in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii and their union was blessed with four children. He had his own lawn mowing and snow removal business (Vic’s Handyman). Vic would spend his leisure time at Hammer Hardware and Nelson Tire & Auto having coffee with the boys and talking over the world’s and the city’s events along with his love for NASCAR, the Iowa Hawkeyes, and New York Yankees. Vic loved to visit the gas station at Buy Low North and was always seen with his coffee cup and cigarette.

Vic was survived by his wife, Joan; four children: son, Kevin, son, Stacy, daughter, Kate Armstrong, and daughter, Tracy (Todd); eight grandchildren: Jordan, Brianna, Tyler, Madison, Abby, Emily, Chelsi, and Jayden; four great-grandchildren: Talyn, Sloane, Rhenley, Blayne and Amelio; sisters: Sister Ann Marie Dunn and Mary Schupanitz; sister-in-law, Lucille Dunn; brother-in-law, Ralph Bistline; along with numerous nieces, nephews, other family members and friends.

Vic was preceded in death by his parents, Rose (Schmitt) and Victor “Franklin” Dunn, Sr.; brother, Bill Dunn; sister, Eleanor Bistline; brother-in-law, Carl Schupanitz; cousin, Margaret Quinlan; and many aunts and uncles.
