Mary Hoeft

Mary Hoeft, 80, of Charles City, passed away Monday, June 16, 2025, at Mayo Clinic Hospital-St. Marys Campus in Rochester, Minnesota with her family by her side.

A Mass of Christian Burial for Mary Hoeft will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, June 23, 2025, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Charles City with Reverend Tom Heathershaw officiating. Burial will be at Calvary Cemetery in Charles City.

Visitation will be from 3-5 p.m. Sunday, June 22, 2025, at Hauser Weishaar Funeral Home in Charles City with a Rosary prayed at 2:30 p.m. Visitation will continue one hour before the service at the church on Monday.

Mary Jane (Burgart) Hoeft was born Feb. 27, 1945, to Hubert and Frances (Meyers) Burgart in New Hampton, Iowa. She attended school in Ionia, Iowa and finished high school at New Hampton graduating in 1963. Mary then continued her education at La’James College in Mason City, Iowa.

In 1968, Mary was united in marriage to David Hoeft on April 27 at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Ionia, Iowa. They made their home in Charles City until the tornado demolished their apartment. The couple then moved to rural Colwell until 1975 when they built a home on their farm five miles east of Charles City, moving their growing family to this new location.

Mary was a stay-at-home mom to Amy, Steve, Andy and Matt. She was also active at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, the Comet Bowl late league bowling, slow pitch softball, Momettes and card club with the Ionia gals. More recently she kept busy playing golf, traveling, playing in two different card clubs, volunteering at the Floyd County Medical Center gift shop and most importantly watching her grandkids in their various activities; wrestling, basketball, football, dance, choir, plays/musicals, softball, volleyball, trap shooting, band, orchestra. 4H/FFA shows, racing, track, cross country, speech and drama.

Mary returned to the workforce once her children were in school for Dr. Steimel in the office. In 1985 Mary went into business for herself by opening The Lock Shop hair salon in Ionia, Iowa.  She continued cutting/doing hair until she retired but was still known to give the twins their haircuts.

Mary is survived by her children: Amy (Dave) Shannon, Steve (Jen) Hoeft, Andy (Kris) Hoeft and Matt (Tina) Hoeft; grandchildren: Morgan (Adam) Johannsen, Connor Shannon (Jess Messerley), Trey Shannon (Chloe Hicks), Austin, Cole, Blake, Camryn Hoeft, Zach Hoeft (Lindsay Zeitler) , Emma Hoeft and Sophie Hoeft (Liam Gallagher), Ashlyn Hoeft (Will Bushman), Aubrey and Cordell Hoeft; great-grandchildren: Barrett Johannsen and Blair Bushman; sisters: Barb Havlik, Joan Hill and Elaine (Tom) Keating; brothers: Dick (Suzanne) Burgart and Tom (Dorann) Burgart; along with numerous nieces, nephews, other family members and friends.

Mary was preceded in death by her husband, David; brother, Dan Burgart; parents; in-laws, Walter and Devora Hoeft; along with several nieces and nephews.
