Community Notes: Update on Charles City Park & Rec projects

Here are updates on some of the projects and activities the Charles City Park & Recreation Department are involved in:

Wildwood Golf Course – Wildwood golf course has made some changes and we are planning on making more changes in the upcoming weeks. We have removed several large trees around the course, some because of shade issues, some for disease reasons, and others because of maintenance reasons.

We have removed sand bunkers that were in poor shape, we also plan on adding new sand to the rest of the sand bunkers.

The clubhouse will be getting new siding installed on the building this coming fiscal year. The current siding is wood siding that is in rough shape. Multiple siding options have been presented and a decision will be made in the near future.

Wildwood and the YMCA will be hosting a golf clinic for ages 7-12. There will be two sessions, one in June and the other in July. Each session will be six days and will be held over the span of 2 weeks. Sign up sheets will be available at the YMCA in May.

We are working on a plan for social distancing, when we open the golf course in the coming weeks. Stay tuned to Wildwood’s and the city’s Facebook Page for when we plan on opening.

Summer Projects — The Park and Recreation Department and the Charles City Community School District are partnering together to resurface the tennis courts at Sportsman’s Park. The project will begin sometime this summer into early fall.

New ball field signs have been made and will be installed at Lion’s Field and Westwood Park. New parking posts will be installed at Sportsman’s Park and Lions Field Park to replace the broken posts. Bleachers at Lion’s Field, Sportsman’s Park, and Westwood will have sections replaced and painted.

Girls Little League Softball will be playing all games at Sportsman’s Park now. This will help parents, grandparents and spectators being able to watch all in one location.

More projects will be coming throughout the year.

Swimming Pool — Last year the water slide was shut down for an extended period of time. This winter we had the water slide refurbished and it will be installed before the season opens. The new colors of the slide will be red, white and blue. The goal is to have the swimming pool open Memorial Day weekend, but weather and other circumstances could push the opening day back.

Swimming Lessons will be taking place again this year. You can find the registration forms by going onto the city’s website and looking under the Park and Recreation Department. There will be two sessions again this year — June 10th-26th and also July 1st-17th. You can turn in registrations to City Hall beginning May 18th.

The Park and Recreation Department will also be offering a Water Zumba Class this year. That will be Monday and Wednesday at 7pm and also on Saturdays at 11am.

Park and Recreation Day — The Park and Recreation Department will be hosting a Park and Recreation Day on Saturday, June 13th. The day will take place over multiple locations, which include Wildwood, Lion’s Field, Sportsman’s Park, and more.

There will be activities for all ages, with a majority of the kid’s activities being free. Some of the activities will be at a discount rate, such as the swimming pool and Wildwood Golf Course.

Some of the other activities will be sand volleyball, kickball, disc golf, trivia, free kids’ games and much more. It is a great way for the family to have fun and see the parks in Charles City.

We will be posting more information in the future in the paper and on the Charles City Website under Park and Recreation Department. If you have any questions on the activities being held during the day please call Tyler Mitchell at 641-257-6312.
