Letter to the Editor: Speed cameras lack ability to react to the situation like an officer could

Waverly has announced that they will now use traffic cameras and they reference Charles City use as one reason. I hope that bothers most residents to hear that.

Speed cameras are unable to do anything but judge speed. They don’t care how much traffic there is or if the driver is OWI, driving recklessly or the condition of the road. In other words they are unable to use any sort of human judgment as to the situation at the time.

A human officer can do all these things and make judgment calls about the appropriate response.

Traffic cameras are only about money and if I were a Charles City voter I would remember that during the next election.
