Letter to the Editor: Politics won’t allow truck speed limiters
By Herman Lenz, Sumner
You’ll never hear this fact from regular news, because it’s too “politically unfavorable.” Republican lawmakers gave Big Trucking owners and operators immunity from lawsuits over a certain amount.
They know where their election funding comes from and it doesn’t come from the victims that get run over by big rigs.
The “speed” of the big rig is never questioned after a crash, and we’re supposed to just believe the trucker, and who can prove otherwise?
Law enforcement should check the truck’s computer (black box) to see what the speed was 10 seconds before the crash, but Republican lawmakers won’t allow it.
At the U.S. level, there have been efforts to require “working speed limit governors” in large trucks, but the trucking lobby and Republicans won’t allow it.
There is a better high tech system to control speed (google for “intelligent speed adaptation”) , but Republican lawmakers and the trucking lobby would blow their fuses if anyone would propose such a sensible crash prevention system.
It would be too “politically unfavorable.”
