State title not out of the question for CC

Girls’ varsity to make a run at state appearance this year

The Comets have the arms and the balance to bring a state title back to Charles City. Only time will tell how good the Comets and this year.

But after posting the best score in program history in the first meet of the year, the boys bowling team has the confidence and promise to get it done.

“Nothing less than a state title this year is what our goal is,” said Tyler Brockney after the match against Vinton-Shellsburg on Nov. 24. “We all feel pretty confident that we’re the best baker team in the state right now.”

Now, there’s a long way between now and February when the top teams in the state compete for a championship. But starting of with a convincing win against the team that edged out the Comets by just one point at the state tournament the year before, is a pretty satisfying way to begin.

The boys’ varsity team is returning six of the seven individuals it sent to the state tournament last season. With the No. 2 state bowler Drew Mitchell on their team, the confidence the team has is rightfully just.

For the girls, who missed the state tournament last season, offseason training has been a must. Both the boys and girls have been lifting in the offseason — and will continue as the season goes on — to raise their core, balance and strength skills to assure a dual state appearance from both Comet teams.

Behind the leadership of Mija Cotton, Falyn Knecht and Macy Ross, the girls’ varsity team is poised to make a state run.
