A gold medal-winning performance by Nashua-Plainfield’s Brock Dietz at 106 pounds and two silver medal finishes by Husky grapplers Matthew Stille and Jason Fisher helped the host team secure a second-place finish Saturday afternoon in Nashua.
“I was excited about today’s wrestling,” said Huskies’ head coach Al Frost. “I thought as a whole we showed good improvement and intensity at home. We’re taking gradual steps forward.”
The 10-team field was won by MFL, MarMac with 243 points. Nashua-Plainfield garnered 143 points and RRMR finished fifth with 97.5 points.
Dietz won the bracket with a first round, 8-0 major decision against MFL’s Zach Trudo and a championship round victory by fall against Austin Case of Garner-Hayfield/Ventura.
“He (Dietz) showed very good intensity,” Frost said. “He was more aggressive than I’ve seen him this year.” Stille came up just short in the 138-pound final, losing out on a 7-5 decision to MFL’s Brady Olson. The Husky senior had cruised through the opening rounds, recording two victories by fall to finish the tournament 2-1.
The 195-pound final was not without drama as Columbus Catholic’s Jacob Haag’s pin of Fisher drew a roar of protests from the home crowd who thought the decision came too early. Frost said he thought his senior wrestler was on his way to working out of a submissive position and the decision was premature.
“He (Fisher) just got caught in a tough situation,” Frost said.
RRMR’s fifth-place finish was fueled by Will Portis’ 17-1 technical fall victory against Jalin Davis of Northwood-Kensett in the 113-pound final. The No. 6 ranked wrestler in his class made quick work of his semifinal round opponent, earning a victory by fall to finish 2-0 on the day and improve to 16-0 overall this year.
Junior Chase Krueger took the silver medal at 126 pounds with a 15-7 major decision win in his opening match before falling to Clarksville’s Koltyn Beckham in the final.
Area wrestlers earning bronze on the day were RRMR’s Trevor Johnson at 120 pounds and Heath Farr in the 195 pound class. Nashua-Plainfield’s Tristen Brase at 132 pounds and Mason Hyde in the 182-pound division also received a bronze.
Next up for Nashua-Plainfield is the Sumner-Fredericksburg quad Tuesday evening at 5:30 p.m. RRMR will be back in action again Dec. 17 as it hosts Newman Catholic and West Hancock at 6 p.m.
