Warriors drop two in weekend contests

RRMR seeking positive push before winter break

The Warriors exhausted a plethora of energy in a tale of two games this weekend, with losses to Northwood-Kensett and AGWSR on Friday and Saturday at home.

RRMR (1-3, 1-2 TOIC) hung with the Vikings, losing in the waning minutes, 57-51. A different story emerged with AGWSR on Saturday, losing 60-28.

The Warriors started off slow in the first quarter against the Cougars and failed to recover during the rest of the game.

Senior Adam Staudt scored the Warriors’ first points of the game to tie it up a 3-3, but that would be the only score the Warriors would get in the first quarter and would trail 16-3 heading into the second quarter of play. The Warriors would show some signs of life in the second quarter, a two-point layup by sophomore Alex Schriever made the score 18-5.

Sophomore Zach Bushbaum and senior Tony Hain got the Warriors to within 20-13, and a two-point score from freshman Kaden Lyman made it a five-point game with about 2:15 to go in the half.

This would be as close as the Warriors would get to catching the Cougars, however, as AGWSR would score two more field goals before the end of the period to post a halftime score of 24-15.

Head coach Ben Klapperich struggled to find positives from the Warriors’ defeat. The main issue, Klapperich said, was, “Definitely our lack of offense,” as well as, “tired legs” because of the previous game played the night before against Northwood-Kensett.

“We’ve got to figure out a little more offense than just two guys. We’ve got to figure out who can score for us,” Klapperich said. “We wanted to control the boards, but we had a tough time with that.”

Klapperich said the team’s second quarter performance could be seen as a light on a otherwise dampened evening.

“We at least found out who really wants to go out and compete night in and night out,” Klapperich said. “We played a good second quarter. That was the only good quarter we had. We came out with more energy there.”

The Warriors next play on Dec. 15 at 7:30 p.m. in Mason City against Newman Catholic. Then, the Warriors return home game against Central Springs Dec. 18 and finish off the week on the road against Clarion-Goldfield on Dec. 19.
