Bearcats relying on defense, practicing offense

Full-court man defense aides win against Saints

North Butler had to implement some extra pressure on Dec. 11 to get a 47-44 win against Saint Ansgar, but for head coach Dave Brown and the Bearcats, a win is a win.

The Bearcats move to 3-2, 3-1 TOIC on the season after the win against the Saints on Friday. After a sluggish start, Brown said a full-court, manon- man defense was able to provide some steals and create some offense on the other end. “I’ve really got to give the kids credit on their effort this far,” Brown said. “They’re not giving up and really getting after it.”

Down six at halftime, Brown said the two teams came out neck and neck in the third quarter. But the fourth quarter is when the Bearcats were able to put the game away.

Behind the shooting of seniors Reid Lammers and Todd Dolan, the two combined for 29 points and helped the Bearcats to the 47-44 victory.

Lammers had 15 points and Dolan had 14 points.

Although the two had hot hands throughout the match Friday, Brown said he wasn’t as content with the overall shooting of his team.

“I really want to get a lot of shots in,” Brown said about the practice plans leading up to the final two games of the season.

“We just need to get them the confidence and hopefully those shots will start falling.”

One positive thus far in the season has been rebounding for the Bearcats. The team had a total of 14 offensive rebounds and 20 defensive rebounds Friday against the Saints.

Senior Jaret Wunsch pulled in 10 himself.

Dolan had eight and Lammers had six rebounds.

“Our rebounding has been really great, and our guys have really been able to rally around that.”

Up next will be a test from the Osage Green Devils who are coming to town tonight at 7:30 p.m.

Then, the Bearcats won’t have a game until Dec. 22 when they host the Huskies.
