CHARLES CITY — The Charles City girls basketball team hosted the Crestwood Cadets on Friday night, and lost 53-30.

Coming off a one of their best games of the season on Tuesday, the Comets were eager to keep making steps forward as a team.

In the first quarter, both teams came out ready to push the tempo of the game.  Charles City moved the ball well and stayed right with Crestwood through most of the quarter until the Cadets ended up on the charity stripe.  Completing a 3-point play and taking advantage of free-throw opportunities enabled the Cadets to take a 21-12 lead after the first quarter.

The second quarter was a defensive battle for both teams.

The Comets’ interior defense stepped up.  Having to defend a 6-foot-2 Tracey Martinek, Charles City had its hands full under the basket.

Sinking into the lane and concentrating on the weak-side rebound helped, Charles City held the Cadets to just six points in the second quarter.  But the Comets though were only able to muster four points themselves and trailed 27-16 at halftime.

Turnovers by the Comets and converted foul shots by the Cadets enabled Crestwood to increase its lead in the third quarter.

Although Charles City would answer with some scattered baskets, the Cadets would never be threatened for the rest of the night.

Kelsi Crooks and Jamie Sindlinger were the leading scorers for Charles City with 8 points apiece.

Sindlinger also had nine rebounds; Crooks pulled down six.

The Cadets with the win improved to 9-6 overall and 5-3 in NEIC play.  With a subsequent loss against Osage, the Comets record is now 1-13 overall and 1-8 in the conference.
