CHARLES CITY — It was a solid night around for the Comet bowling as both the girls and the boys varsity teams triumphed at home over visiting Tripoli, Friday at Comet Bowl.

With the wins, both squads moved to 6-1 on the season.

The boys team won its match handily thanks to the outstanding play of seniors Hunter Koebrick, Brady Girkin, and sophomore Hunter Brockney. Koebrick lead both teams with a combined score of 442 after two games. Brockney and Girkin tallied scores of 426 and 425, respectively. Koebrick also recorded a game-high 259 in his first ten frames.

In the end, the boys won by a comfortable margin, 3,111-2,846.

On the girls’ side of things, the competition was a lot closer. It came down to the final few frames of the last game, but the Comets hung on to complete the sweep.

Sophomore Macy Ross led the girls with a combined score of 410 — 205 average on the day. Ross also recorded a game-high of 213 in her first game. Sophomore Kate Sickman also had an impressive outing, recording a score of 208 in her second go-around and finished behind Ross with a final score of 368.

Comet coach Doug Bohlen was pleased with his teams’ all-around performance, but noted that there was still some room for improvement. Bohlen also noted that the two best scores of the day came from the junior varsity squad.

Sophomore Kaleb Ross bowled the highest score of the day at 462, while Sadie Ruzicka lead all the girls with a final tally of 447.

“The girls have done better once, and the boys have done better twice, but I was pleased with the spare shooting, and especially with the girls’ composure in such a tight match,” Bohlen said. “I was a little embarrassed that I had my two best bowlers on JV today, but that always seems to happen.”
