Warriors take two from Tribe
Rockford boys win fourth in a row; girls improve to 14-4
CLARKSVILLE — Dalton Winters scored a game-high 17 points — some of which from deft post feeds; others from fearless drives to the hole — to lead Rockford to its fourth victory in a row by defeating Clarksville, 59-41, in non-conference boys basketball action Monday night.
The Indians managed to take a 15-10 lead late in the first quarter, but Rockford’s trapping defense soon asserted itself, allowing the Warriors to cash in the open court and take control of the game.
A pair of inside baskets by Winters helped Rockford take a 25-24 lead with 1:30 left in the half before Jake Staudt’s steal and layup extended the lead to 27-24 at the half.
Consecutive 3-pointers by Zach Bushbaum, another trey by 5-foot-4 freshman Staudt, and a successful drive to the basket by Winters helped put Rockford up 43-29 going into the fourth quarter.
Staudt, Bushbaum and Alex Schriever each had 8 points for Rockford (7-11).
Ben Waetjen had 12 points for the Indians (1-16).
In the previous girls game, Fallon Marth, Sarah Parcher and Emma Staudt accounted for 41 of their team’s 49 points by scoring 16, 14 and 11 points, respectively, in a 49-33 victory over the Indians.
Rockford (14-4) led by 22 at the half (34-12). Clarksville pulled within 11 late in the third quarter, and was in the free-throw bonus during the final nine minutes of game, but couldn’t take advantage or pose much of a threat.
Brittney Litterer had 13 points to lead Clarksville (10-9).
Rockford next scheduled boys and girls games are today at home against Saint Ansgar. Though Rockford had already cancelled school in anticipation of inclement weather, there was still a slight chance the games will be played as of Monday night.
