Black Friday for local wrestlers

Staff Report

DES MOINES — The second day of the Iowa State Wrestling Championships was “Black Friday” for several local wrestlers competing in the Class 1A tournament.

Nashua-Plainfield’s 182-pounder Jason Fisher lost his quarterfinal bout by way of technical fall to Daniel Bishop of Hinton, then lost in the second round of consolations to Treynor’s Steven Gregory, who stuck Fisher at the 3:04 mark.

Tristen Brase, representing Nashua-Plainfield as a 126-pounder, was leading Ben Freese of Nodaway Valley 7-4 in the consolation second round with less than a 30 seconds left in regulation before Freese turned the tables and pinned Brase at the 5:48 mark.

North Butler 152-pounder Dalton Nelson advanced past his second-round consolation bout against Tanner Greenwald of Wilton — a 2-1 squeaker that ended just in time for Nelson as Greenwald was on the verge of a getting a near-fall when time expired. But Nelson was later defeated by Drew Anderson of Westwood-Sloan, 7-2, in the third round of consolations.

Rockford 106-pounder Will Portis was hoping to improve on his fifth-place showing from last year, even though the best he could have done was third place after dropping the first match of the tournament the day before to Wapsie Valley-Fairbank’s Donny Schmit on Thursday. Portis responded with a 7-0 decision over Juan Guido in the first round of consolations that day, before thoroughly defeating Hunter Pfantz of West Marshall in the second round.

Against Kurtis Krager of Oa-bcig in the third round, Portis couldn’t get the takedown he needed to avoid a 7-6 loss.

As third-round consolation losers, Nelson and Portis get the opportunity to wrestle for seventh place.
