CHARLES CITY — According to Charles City girls golf coach Eric Johanningmeier, the first real competition of the season gives you a better idea what needs to done.

“You find out what you can do, and you find out what needs to be worked on,” Johanningmeier said after his Comet team hosted Nashua-Plainfield and Osage Monday at Cedar Ridge Golf Course.

So what needs to be worked on?

“Just about everything,” Johanningmeier said.

Playing the back nine, the Comet girls recorded a 211 team score which put them smack between Osage (200) and Nashua-Plainfield (239).

During cold and windy day made somewhat bearable by sunny skies, Osage’s Courtney Tusler recorded lowest score of the day (39) even when including the boys competition on the front nine featuring the same schools.

Charles City senior and returning state qualifier Jamie Sindlinger was runner-up to medalist Tusler with a 5-over-par 41.

“In golf it comes down to individuals making individual plans to improve themselves,” Johanningmeier said. “As coaches, we’re here to help.”

For Nashua-Plainfield, Monday was also its season opener.

For Osage, it was its second meet as the Green Devils improved to 3-0.

On the boys side, Charles City was paced by sophomore Theo Arndt, who shot a medalist score of 40. With a team score of 178, the Comets went 2-0 for the day besting Osage (191) and Nashua-Plainfield 203.

“There were a lot of positives out there … some good scores,” Charles City boys coach Dave Williams said. “Theo shot well, Jackson (Molstead) shot well (43). It’s early in the season, but we should be competitive.”

Charles City’s next meet for both squads is today with the boys taking on Waukon at Cedar Ridge, and the girls traveling to Waukon.

“But the weather we’re supposed to get might not allow it,” Williams said. “We actually started playing a little earlier this year from past years.

“The practices have been choppy. You’d like to get five good days in a row instead of two or three.”
