ROCKFORD — Chances are the weather will get better.

And so will the Rockford Warriors girls golf team, and it may thank the tumultuous spring in getting it there.

“Inclement weather has been a challenge to our team,” Rockford coach Carmen Staudt said. “If it’s not raining, the wind was blowing. It really does prepare the ladies for every type of situation that Mother Nature has in store.”

As for rain and wind, last Thursday had healthy intermittent doses of both including some snowflake sightings. Most all prep events in the northern Iowa region were cancelled, except for the multi-team meet at Acorn Park Recreation Area featuring girls and boys teams from Rockford, Nashua-Plainfield and hosting St. Ansgar.

Conditions beckoned high scores, even from the teams’ respective state qualifiers. But the Warriors were able to get in their first meet of the season after their originally scheduled opener on April 5 was cancelled.

Rockford returns three state qualifiers: senior Michaela Krull, and juniors Sydney Fullerton and Kylee Smith.

Senior Madelyn Paulus is another returning letter winner.

“(Paulus and Theresa Jones) are new to our top five,” Staudt said. “They have participated in others sports for the school bringing experience in competition.”

At Acorn Park, the Warriors lost to the Huskies (217-232) in a two-team match as St. Ansgar didn’t field a full team. Staudt considers Nashua-Plainfield their toughest conference opponent.

“Nashua-Plainfield was a state qualifier, too, so we anticipate it will bring the same level of intensity as last year,” said Staudt, who also mentioned conference newcomer Osage as another formidable rival.

“Our goals are simple: Play each meet to the best of our abilities,” Staudt said.

As for expectations …

“Bring new talent into the program to strengthen our team,” Staudt said.
