WAVERLY — Prom is a big event for many high schoolers.
But for several Charles City underclass golfers, it provided an open door to participate in an 18-hole varsity invitational.
“This was a great opportunity to show what we’ve got,” Charles City sophomore Carter Klatt said after completing the Waverly-Shell Rock Invitational on Saturday.
“Many of us don’t get a chance to play at the varsity level,” said Klatt, who has carded several top junior varsity scores for Charles City during his budding career as a Comet. “This is good way to get experience.”
With many of Charles City’s top golfers not making the trip to Waverly Municipal Golf Course in favor to get ready for prom, the six-man team of Klatt, Colton Slinger, Carter Johanningmeier, Nolan Loftus, Luke DeLap and Kaleb Ross filled in to play the 18-hole event.
Though they finished back in the pack, the Comets did get a game effort from Klatt, who carded a 94, and Ross, who paced the team with a 92.
“Playing 18 holes is a lot tougher than you might think,” Ross said. “I got real tired at the end.”
