The Charles City boys varsity golf team looked impressive at times in playing the entire Cedar Ridge 18-hole course while hosting Waukon on Friday.
Both teams took part in just their second front-and-back nine meet this season. The Saturday before, Charles City competed in an 18-hole invitational hosted by Waverly-Shell Rock, but fielded primarily a reserve squad as many of the team’s upperclassmen had prom that night.
At CR, the final tally stood at 363 to 394 in favor of the home team.
The best individual rounds of the day belonged to sophomore Theo Arndt and junior Drew Mitchell, who each carded an 88 for CC. Highlights included a birdie on the Par 5 fourth hole for Arndt and a birdie on the Par 4 18th to finish the day for Mitchell.
Arndt scored a 46 on the front nine and a 42 on the back nine, while Mitchell recorded scores of 44 on both sides of the course.
Finishing right behind Arndt and Mitchell was Comet junior Nate Lasher (89), who recorded consecutive pars on holes 11,12, and 13. Other recorded scores for Charles City included sophomores Kaleb Ross (98) and Carter Klatt (103). Senior Jacob Nixt was next for CC with a 107.
The top score for Waukon belonged to senior Luke Zezulka, who carded a 90, followed by senior Mason McMillan (97)
With Friday’s win, Charles City improved its 18-hole average from 394 to 378.5 and moved to 2-4 overall on the season.
The next meet for the Charles City boys varsity golf team will be at Oelwein on Tuesday, April 26, followed by a rematch against Decorah at home on Friday, April 29. Charles City lost their earlier matchup against Decorah at Silvercrest Golf Course, 166-198.
Both meets this week are scheduled to begin at 4 p.m.
