NASHUA — The inaugural playing of the Top of Iowa conference golf meet Monday afternoon at Nashua Town and Country Club became just a little bit dicier with the addition of howling winds, wet surfaces and the constant threat of even more rain.

But it’s nothing the boys from North Butler, Nashua-Plainfield, and Rockford as well as their eastern division rivals weren’t already used to by now.

After 18 holes of rather soggy golf, the top two spots belonged to Newman Catholic and St. Ansgar, who finished with final team scores of 329 and 335, respectively, while North Butler was able to overcome the elements to finish a respectable fourth place (356) with the hosting Nashua-Plainfield Huskies finished one stroke behind the Bearcats in fifth.

Rockford finished eighth (373).

Top individual performer on the day was senior Ben Ball of Newman Catholic, who carded a 78. Senior Devin Koob of Nashua-Plainfield finished with 79 on the day, highlighting his round with a birdie on the Par 3 second hole. Koob tied with sophomore Austin Eckenrod of Newman Catholic for second, and Eckenrod would eventually break the tie after defeating Koob in a playoff.

Also competing for the Huskies were senior Zach Bond, who finished tied for seventh after carding an 85; senior Brandon Raymer, who finished with a score of 96; sophomore Devin Auchstetter, 97; sophomore Dillon Auchstetter, 107; and freshman Drew Moine rounded out the group with a score of 119.

North Butler’s low-scorer was senior Michael DeBerg, who also finished tied for seventh with a final tally of 85, which was capped off with a birdie on the Par 4 16th hole.

Finishing right behind DeBerg was senior Trevor Wangsness at 87. Other scores for North Butler include senior Austin Janssen, who carded a 91; senior Jaret Wunsch, 93; fresh Beau Thompson, 94; and sophomore Isaac Trees, who finished with a score of 104.

The standout for the Warriors of Rockford was senior Zack Westendorf, who continued his strong season, carding an 86 and finishing 11th overall.

Also competing for the Warriors were freshman Kaden Lyman and senior Wyatt Paulus, who each finished posted a 95 on the day; sophomore Nick Goodrich scored 97; sophomore Zach Bushbaum carded a 99; and junior Weston Engels notched a score of 100 on the day.

With the day’s result, Nashua-Plainfield improved it’s combined average to 188.93, while North Butler bumped up it’s average to 186.

North Butler and Rockford will return to Nashua Town and Country Club this Friday for the sectional meet, scheduled to begin at 10 a.m.

Before sectionals, Rockford will matchup against Central Springs and Newman Catholic at Highland Park Golf Course in Mason City on Thursday, May 12, for a meet set to tee off at 4 p.m.
