NASHUA — Strong drives and smart play led the Nashua-Plainfield girls varsity golf team to a second-place finish in the first round of the regional tournament held Monday afternoon at Nashua Town and Country Club.

The effort advance the Huskies to the regional final next Monday (May 23) at Buffalo Creek Golf Course in Winthrop..

The Huskies finished with an overall team score of 427, 14 strokes shy of Clarksville, who claimed the top spot with a score of 413. Finishing third was East Buchanan, 452, followed by West Central at 476. Tripoli, Turkey Valley, and Central Elkader finished in sixth, seventh, and eighth, respectively.

Individually, the low score on the day for Nashua-Plainfield belonged to senior Kelsey Poppe, who finished second overall, carding an 18-hole score of 101, a performance highlighted by a 49 on the first nine holes. Finishing right behind Poppe was fellow senior Hailey Schmitz, who recorded a score of 107 and finished seventh overall. The best score on the day belonged to senior Bridget Ross of Clarksville, who carded a 95, highlighted by a 44 on the second nine.

Also playing for Nashua-Plainfield were junior Haley Hillesheim, who carded a 109 on the day; sophomore Megan Cerwinske, 110; as well as junior Kaitlyn Betsinger and freshman Keagan Betsinger, who each scored 111. Hillesheim and Cerwinske finished ninth and tenth overall, while Kaitlyn and Keagan tied for 13th.

“I feel pretty good,” Nashua-Plainfield head coach Jeff Trost said after the meet concluded. “We knew Clarksville was going to be very tough to beat. They’ve been playing very good golf. We had some girls turn in their best 9-hole scores of the year, so you’ve got to feel good about that.”

With nearly a whole week to prepare for the final, Trost noted that his team has some things to address in order to continue to see success.

“We need to work on the short game,” Trost said. “From what I saw today, we had way too many puts, so we’ve got to do better at that.”
