Strong finish bumps Huskies up to seventh at girls golf state tournament
N-P senior Poppe 16th among individuals; Rockford’s Fullerton 14th

The Nashua-Plainfield girls golf team improved 16 strokes from the first round to Wednesday’s second round while moving up a place to finish seventh at the Class 1A Girls State Golf Tournament held at Jester Park Golf Course in Granger.
After carding a 421 team score on Tuesday placing them at the bottom of the qualified eight-team field, the Huskies shot a 405 for a two-day total of 826 moving two strokes ahead of Iowa Valley, which shot a 413 on Tuesday before carding a 415 on Wednesday.
Husky senior Kelsey Poppe improved nine strokes on Wednesday with an 18-hole round of 89. Her two-day total of 187 had her tied for 16th among individuals.
Other Huskies competing at state included Hiley Hillesheim (211 two-day total), Hailey Schmitz (213), Megan Cerwinske (216), Keagan Betsinger (228) and Kaitlyn Betsinger (229).
Rockford’s Sydney Fullerton qualified as an individual and finished 14th with a two-round total of 183.
New London won the state title by a long shot as its two-day score of 666 bested runner-up Akron-Westfield by 74 strokes.
Samatha Knight of third-place West Monona was the individual champ as she put together consecutive rounds of 73 for a 146 total.
New London’s Emma Pry (151) and Casey Noble (152) placed second and third, respectively.
