CHARLES CITY — Hit them where they ain’t.

That’s what baseball pioneer and hall of famer Willie Keeler replied when a sports writer asked about his secret for hitting such a high average.

Waverly-Shell Rock’s Anna Kayser managed to hit it “where they ain’t” — or rather right between them as her two-out double splitting Charles City’s left and center fielders drove in the tying and eventual winning runs in the Go-Hawks’ 3-2 victory in Game 1 of Tuesday’s doubleheader against the Comets at Sportsmen’s Park.

Charles City starter Megan Roethler went into the seventh with a 2-1 lead. She yielded nine hits and three earned runs while suffered her and the Comets’ first loss of the season.

Winning pitcher Kelsey Aikey yielded five hits and two runs, and struck out 15 for the Go-Hawks.

Waverly-Shell Rock also got a lift from Emma Robson, who hit a solo home run.

Shae Etherington, who just missed snagging Kayser’s drive for what would have been the final out of game, was 2-for-3 with a RBI for the Comets.

In Game 2, the Comets were limited to three hits as the Go-Hawks completed the DH sweep with a 4-0 shutout victory.

Cassie Rottink went the distance for the win, striking out eight and walking three. Aikey was 2-for-3 with a double, a RBI and run scored for Waverly-Shell Rock, which improved to 5-0 overall and 2-0 in the Northeast Iowa Conference

Losing pitcher Tayler Schmidt gave up five hits and three earned runs for Charles City (4-2, 2-2).
