Comets pound out 38 hits in softball DH sweep of Waukon

Staff Report

Charles City scored 10 runs in two innings, including a seven-run rally in the seventh, to blow open what was a close game in a 12-4 away victory over Cedar Falls on Wednesday.

Charles City pounded out 17 hits — five for extra bases — and managed to come back from a 3-1 deficit through four innings.

Shae Etherington was 4-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs scored, and Bailey Mitchell was 4-for-5 with a double, RBI and run scored for the Comets.

Also contributing were Jamie Sindlinger, who was 2-for-3 with a triple, two RBIs and two runs scored; Taylor Schmidt, who had two hits including a double, and two RBIs; and leadoff hitter Megan Staudt, who doubled and scored three runs.

Megan Roethler earned the complete-game victory after striking out six and yielding three earned runs in seven innings.

On Thursday, Charles City traveled to Waukon for a double header. The Comets won both games by scores of 14-2 and 12-1.

When asked of who were the hitting stars of the day, Charles City coach Brian Bohlen was a little dumbfounded.

“It’s hard to single anyone out,” he said. “It pretty much came from up and down the lineup.”

And how. Batting in just 11 innings due to shortened games, the Comets pounded out 38 hits — 17 in the first game, and 21 in the nightcap.

In Game One, Schmidt and Payton Reams each had three hits.

In Game Two, Schmidt, Roethler Sara Martin and Bailey Mitchell each had three hits.

One of Martin’s hits was a homer, her second of the season.

All this was more than enough support for winning starters Roethler — who pitched a one-hitter in Game One — and Schmidt in the latter game.

The three wins over past two days improved the Comets’ overall record to 7-2 and 2-2 in the Northeast Iowa Conference.
