SAINT ANSGAR — Despite a strong offensive showing, the Nashua-Plainfield softball team will want to quickly forget the outcome of its game Wednesday night on the road against St. Ansgar, in which the Huskies led throughout before losing in the end, 13-12.

The Huskies started hot out the gate, tallying five runs in the first inning. The inning was highlighted by a pair of doubles from junior Sierra Fisher and sophomore Britney Holthaus. All together, the Huskies combined for six hits in the first inning, which combined with some shoddy defensive play by the Saints, put N-P in the driver’s seat early

After the Saints pulled within two through two innings (5-3), then one (6-5) through three, N-P shortstop Sydney Hansen doubled in a pair of runs to make the score 8-5 through five.

The Huskies appeared to have the game well in-hand after scoring four runs in the seventh inning to go up 12-6. The rally was highlighted by two-run home run by freshman Bailey Sievers.

But the Saints rallied for seven runs in the latter half of the inning for an incredible come-from-behind victory.

Nashua-Plainfield head coach Dani Demuth was disappointed after the game, and stressed that her team needs to remember to not take anything for granted or assume any lead is safe.

“We’ve got to be in in 100 percent of the time, not just half,” Demuth said. “We’ve got to stay fired up 100 percent of the time. We’ve got to know we can do it. Our mental game has got to be there.”

Demuth would go on to praise the play of Sievers, who was brought in midway through the game in place of senior Mackenzie Ludeman, and went 2-for-2 with a double included with her homer.

“I was really proud of Bailey Sievers stepping up at the plate,” Demuth said.

Other standouts for the Huskies included Hansen, who drove in four runs; and Holthaus and senior third baseman Briley Fisher, who each tallied three hits. For Holthaus, two of those hits were doubles. Fisher also had a stolen base.

The loss drops the Huskies to 1-3 on the season, and 1-2 within the Top of Iowa Conference. Nashua-Plainfield’s next game will be today at home against winless Osage. The start is scheduled for 6 p.m.
