CEDAR FALLS — With 34 trap stations placed side-by-side, the line of fire at the Iowa Scholastic Clay Target Program State Championships held Thursday through Saturday at Cedar Falls Gun Club seemed to stretch into infinity.

And for the Charles City/Nashua-Plainfield trapshooting team, the tournament’s final sun-baked and sweltering day was also stretched to the limits.

Being graced as one of the first teams to shoot on Friday, CC/N-P’s schedule was flipped for Saturday as its squads were among the last shoot about when the day’s heat-index was at its highest.

That didn’t bode well for Charles City graduated senior Sydney North, who had to battle through one of her periodical migraine headaches exasperated by the heat.

In a gutsy performance, North managed to hit 93 of 100 clays on Saturday.

Amid the unofficial All-Around Ladies standings, North and teammate Rebecca Tierney — who hit 94 clays on Saturday — were tied for 11th.

Izzy Worrall, another graduated Charles City senior, was tied for 20th in All-Around Ladies.

Jacob “Shorty” Greenzweig hit 97 targets on Saturday to lead Charles City.

In the Senior American Singles Division, Charles City senior Luke Hillegas hit 191 out of 200 clays, which placed him 58th.

“We shot well down here,” CC/N-P coach Tim Laube said. “Some of our better shooters shot as well as we expected, but some of our inexperienced shooters surprised us.

Charles City’s Devin Alton, Brendan Kvernevig and Kaleb Osier all recorded 25-of-25 rounds during the championships.

“It’s nice to get that first one,” Laube said. “Now they’ve got to contribute 25 dollars to the pot.”

Though it’s the end the high school season, there are still more clay pigeons to obliterate for several Charle City shooters. Greenzweig, Hillegas, North, Tierney, Worrall, Tierney and Hunter Koebrick will compete at the SCTP Nationals, July 12-16 in Marengo, Ohio.

“They will be representing Charles City,” Laube said. “In order to compete at nationals, you have to had competed at your state meet.

“We’ve sent more down to nationals before. Our numbers are a little down this year.”
