CHARLES CITY — To roll the dice during Comprehensive Systems, Inc.’s annual golf outing, you needed to be more than lucky — you needed to be good.

Rich Robert and Craig Begemann were a little bit of both when they came to the “Roll the Dice” juncture of the benefit event, Monday at Cedar Ridge Golf Course.

Those able to place it on the green on Cedar Ridge’s 153-yard, par-3 13th hole got a chance to roll a pair of giant dice to determine the number of raffle tickets for a recliner donated by Dungey’s Furniture and Floors.

Robert was able to place his iron shot seven feet from the pin, while Begemann’s got his inside the fringe of the green.

Robert rolled a six and Begemann rolled a nine. And for good measure, Bob Aringdale sank the seven-footer for birdie putting the Charles City foursome — which also included Ken Squire — seven under through 13 holes in the best-ball format.

“I think there is one team we’re still trying to catch,” Squire said shortly before all the golf teams were called in to take shelter at the clubhouse ahead of an approaching storm.

This was the 20th outing held by Comprehensive Systems, Inc., a non-profit corporation that provides services to individuals with special needs. This year attracted 33 “scramble” teams.

“We down a little from last year,” said Jean Shannon, one of the outing’s organizers. “The early rain may have scared some teams away.”

In addition to the “Roll the Dice” side competition, there were other hole challenges including “Longest Putt”, “Straightest Drive” and “Closest to the Pin.”

With the vast amount of door prizes donated from various local businesses and individuals, everyone leaves a winner. But there is a catch.

“There are some nice prizes that have been donated, and most of the golfers have seen them in the clubhouse before going out,” Shannon said. “Those who come in first get to choose first. If you finish back in the pack, you might end up with a water bottle.”

Aside from it grain raffle held later in the year, the golf outing is Comprehensive Systems’ top fundraising.

“This is a big deal for us,” Shannon said. “Proceeds go for things like adaptive equipment for our residents in need.

“We usually start planning for this in February.”
