Comets drop two to Huskies

CHARLES CITY — Twice the Comets baseball team dug itself into a hole early, and twice it relied on strong long relief performances to get back into the game.

But in both cases it wasn’t enough as the Comets were swept by Northeast Iowa Conference foe Oelwein, 8-6 and 6-3 in order Tuesday a Sportsmen’s Park.

In the first game, the Huskies jumped out to a 5-0 lead. Nate Lasher came in to relieve Charles City starter Theo Arndt with the bases loaded and no outs in the second inning.

From that point, Lasher was solid enough to give his team a chance for a comeback. And the Comets almost did catch the Huskies as a three-run rally in the fourth made the score 7-6 Oelwein.

Tyler Brockney was 3-for-4 with two RBIs; and Arndt, Brady Sickman, Drew Mitchell and Noah Schlader each had two hits for the Comets, which rapped out a total of 14 hits.

The Comets hit the ball well in the second game as Lasher, Arndt and Jordan Kapping each had multi-hit games. But as in the case in the first game, Charles City too often was unable to get key two-out hits to keep rallies going or to get one started.

For the day in which they pounded out a total of 25 hits, the Comets left 19 men on base.

Arndt, who was relieved in the first game, came in for Mitchell in the third inning of the second game and only yielded one earned run in four and two-thirds innings.

Charles City fell to 7-16 and 4-11 in the NEIC.

Led by John Leo who was 4-for-8 with four RBIs and four runs scored during the DH, Oelwein improved to 18-10 and 10-6.
