Bobcats capitalize against Comets, 44-13
Staff Report
VAN HORNE — With both teams coming into the game with 3-1 Class 3A, District 3 records with a playoff spot on the line, early on it looked like the Charles City Comets and the hosting Benton Community Bobcats were going to locked up in a defensive duel.
But the Bobcats took advantage of two blocked punts and a failed fake-punt attempt on consecutive Charles City possession to bust out to a commanding 21-0 lead on way to winning 44-13.
Maurice Williams rushed for three touchdowns, and quarterback Spencer Touro threw for two other scores for Benton Community (5-2, 4-1), which led by as many as 38 points to initiate a running clock late in the fourth quarter.
The Comets (3-4, 3-2) got things back to standard football time when Jaden Foster made a fine leaping 20-yard TD catch from a Drew Mitchell pass with 7:40 left in regulation.
The Comets struck again on their first play of their next possession when Tre Walker got behind the Bobcats secondary to haul in a 65-yard bomb from Mitchell.
The Comet would have likely had to beat the Bobcats and subsequent district foes Decorah (Oct. 14 at home) and Waverly-Shell Rock (Oct. 21 away) in closing out the regular season to have a chance of securing that second district playoff spot — top-ranked and undefeated Xavier currently has dibs on the first spot.
Nonetheless, Charles City isn’t mathematically eliminated.
