GREENE — Talk about arriving fashionably late.

Halloween came early for the North Butler student section in attendance for the Bearcats’ Class 1A-Region 5 first-round volleyball match Tuesday against the CAL Cadets.

There were no monsters, goblins or zombies, but while adopting a Village People theme, some were just as scary.

Problem was by the time this menagerie of characters was at full strength, the match was almost over.

The Bearcats made quick work of the visiting Cadets with straight-set scores of 25-11, 25-13 and 25-8. The win advances North Butler (16-16) to the quarterfinal round where it will host the winner of the Newman Catholic at Northwood-Kensett match on Monday (Oct. 25) at 7 p.m.

The Cadets (3-18) didn’t pose much of a threat the entire match, which was over in less than 50 minutes.

In the first set, Nicole Heeren’s kill gave the Bearcats a 5-1 lead. Soon after, Makayla Hauser assisted Heeren on another kill extending the lead to 19-8.

With a block, Hauser recorded a kill herself which she followed with an ace to make the score 23-11, before a kill by Darby Christensen ended the set.

In the second set, Hallie Testerot and Emy Osterbuhr teamed up for a blocking kill to make the score 12-7 before Kayla Siemens’s kill extended the lead to 14-7.

Several hard serves by Osterbuhr resulted in an ace and a Cadet dig that bounded over the net where Heeren was there to put it away for a kill as the Bearcats rolled off eight straight points for a 19-7 lead.

The Cadets can say they at least forced North Butler to call a timeout after a six-point run moved them a little closer (19-13).

But a Hauser to Heeren kill broke the Cadet run while starting a 6-1 run for the Bearcats to finish the second set.

Seven-straight service points by Taylor Salge put the Bearcats up 18-6 in the third set. When the Cadets broke her serve, they had to face hard-serving Osterbuhr again after the subsequent side-out.

Osterbuhr finished the set and match with a pair of aces.
