CHARLES CITY — If they ever decide to move the high school 3-point line back to NBA range, it will likely have little effect on Jackson Molstead’s scoring average.

Heck, they could move it back to 25 … 26 feet. It wouldn’t matter much, especially on days when the Charles City sophomore shooting guard is on fire like he was Saturday when the Comets hosted the Algona Bulldogs in non-conference boys basketball action.

Molstead hit 7 of 9 from beyond the arc — and we mean well beyond the arc — while compiling a game-high 29 points while leading the Comets to a convincing 64-40 victory.

Molstead also had six assists, and Cade Hemesath added 12 point for Charles City (2-0), which led from start to finish.

After Molstead’s first trey gave the Comets a 9-2 lead at the end of the first quarter, the Bulldogs connected on a pair of 3-point shots on consecutive possessions to pull within one (9-8). That’s as close as it got at Mike Cranshaw’s steal and ensuing three-point play layup gave the Comets some distance at 17-12 before Hemesath’s lone 3-point shot enabled Charles City to double its foes’ score (24-12) before taking a 27-12 lead at the half.

One thing about taking long shots is that, when you miss, they tend to result in long rebounds. That where long wing-span Comet senior Jaden Foster comes in.

With the Bulldogs desperately fighting to get into striking distance or just to make a game out of it, Foster was able to snare one of Molstead’s rare misses to keep the possession alive. After swinging the ball around the perimeter, Molstead took another trey, this one finding the bottom of the net and giving the Comets a 42-21 lead shortly before the start of the fourth quarter.

Foster led the Comets with eight rebounds.

Nick Stein was the only Bulldog in double figures with 13 points. The loss evened Algona’s record at 1-1.

Charles City is back in action tonight when they host Clear Lake.
