Scholarship winners honored at CC Youth League Bowling banquet
CHARLES CITY — To paraphrase a famous song, “You don’t always get what you want … you get what you need.”
So when Charles City Youth League Bowling president Kim Usher announced the names of several of the league’s high school-aged male bowlers midway through a door-prize drawing with many of the primo donated items already taken, she would say, “I think there are still some hair product selections up there.”
Whether they need to color their locks or not, one thing all the youth bowlers could use is scholarship money.
Before the door-prize drawing that concluded the league’s end-of-season awards banquet March 25 at Comet Bowl, winners and top placers from the league’s Higher Education Tournament — which took place the weekend before — were honored.
Scholarship prizes ranged from $450 to $100, and were placed in a “Higher Education” account at First Citizens Bank where they could only be withdrawn from the recipients upon reaching 18 years of age and/or high school graduation.
Top division placers are as follows (handicap series in parentheses).
BOYS 11-AND-UNDER — 1. Brandt Sonne (680), 2. Zac Sonne (620), 3. Ben Girkin (614), 4. Keaton Roos (586).
BOYS 12-18 — 1. Tino Tamayo (753), 2. Owin Alton (735), 3. Nathan Girkin (691), 4. Kaleb Cotton (643), 5. Chris Tuel (640), 6. Dillon Ross (636), 7. Cael Bohlen (631), 8. Mason White (622), 9. Dylan Shultz (617).
GIRLS DIVISION — 1. Faith Fannon (805), 2. Macy Ross (666), 2. Sofia Nelson (666), 3. Layla Barry (664), 4. Baili Girkin (636), 5. Sarah Mitchell (621).
High-attendance bowlers were also awarded — or had the best chance of winning — donated prizes in another raffle. Bowlers were given a number of raffle tickets to be possibly drawn contingent on how many weeks attended.
“Many of the donations are from local businesses and individuals,” Usher said. “They help keep us going.”
During the door-prize drawing, Usher was assisted by Charles City High School boys and girls bowling coach Doug Bohlen, who also put together a traveling team from the league which placed second in the Coed Division at the Iowa Middle School State Tournament earlier this month in Ames.
“This is our feeder program,” Bohlen said.
