CHARLES CITY — Before Charles City’s non-conference home boys basketball game against North Fayette Valley on Thursday night, Comet junior Jack Molstead was honored for recently becoming one of five Comet players to accumulate 1,000 points during their careers.

During Charles City’s road victory over Crestwood two nights before, Molstead was the only one out of five Comet starters who didn’t achieve double-digit scoring.

Considering those two facts together, it didn’t bode well for the Tigerhawks.

Comet junior Jack Molstead, pictured with Charles City head basketball coach Ben Klapperich, was honored before Thursday's home game against North Fayette Valley for recently reaching 1,000 points in his career. He is one of five Comet players including Greg Brunner, Nathan Buss, David Rottinghaus and Caleb Hageman, to have reached the 1,000-point milestone.

The visitors managed to burst out of the gate to score the first 5 points of the game. But after Charles City outscored them 20-3 in the second quarter, the game was an official rout as the Class 3A No. 7-ranked Comets cruised to a 84-43 victory.

As for Molstead, he did manage to reach double-figures — by halftime as he eventually ended up with a game-high 22 points while being on the floor for only about two-and-a-half quarters.

Comet senior Mike Cranshaw had 17 points, a good portion of which he scored while using the glass at unconventional angles during drives to the baskets.

Fellow senior Noah Schlader didn’t use much glass while scoring 13 … didn’t use much rim, either as he hit three clean swish 3-pointers in the first quarter to help put the Comets ahead and then attain some distance before Charles City took complete control.

Cade Hemesath scored 7 and had four blocks before he — like many of the Comet starters — took a seat early to allow some minutes for the reserves.

The Comets (15-2) scored a season-high 84 points while putting 12 players in the scorebook, including Tyreque Baker who drained a half-court shot to the delight to the Charles City student section to end the game.

Kole Johnson scored 14 points to lead the Tigerhawks (5-15).

The Comets will be back in action on Friday (Feb. 3) when they travel to Waukon for a Northeast Iowa Conference matchup. With a 9-0 conference record, Charles City is atop the NEIC standings.

* The Charles City girls basketball team played the Tigerhawks in North Fayette Valley and lost 50-39.

The Comet girls will host Waukon on Friday for their “Senior Night”.
