CHARLES CITY — Whenever teams hold their “Senior Nights”, the honored student-athletics often list a bevy of goals they tend to pursue after graduation.

Rylee Hageman kept it simple.

“Get a job.”

No doubt, that’s the goal most parents of soon-to-be high school and college graduates wish their kids would adhere.

Hageman’s current jobs with the Comets are to provide instant offense off the bench as well as inspiration to the team that’s going through a challenging team.

And she’s performing both jobs fairly well, thank you.

Hageman and her favorite teammate, Payton Reams, as well as senior cheerleader Marissa Deeter, were honored before the Comets’ final home game of the season, Friday against Northeast Iowa Conference foe Waukon.

Reams, who leads the Comets in assists, also was honored at halftime as the recipient of the Amy Boley Heiter Scholarship Award in memory of the former Charles City star who was pursuing a career in education before cancer claimed her life.

Reams also plans to pursuing a career in education.

Against Waukon, it wasn’t one of the Charles City’s better nights. After three straight games where they were in contention for all four quarters, Comets struggled out of the gate and couldn’t generate much of an offensive rhythm. The Indians took an overwhelming 36-4 lead at the half before winning, 54-9.

Charles City (0-17, 0-9 NEIC) has two more regular-season road games: Waverly-Shell Rock (Feb. 6) and Decorah (Feb. 9).

After playing the Vikings in the finale, the Comets will face them again in the first round of the Class 4A-Region 2 tournament, Feb. 14 in Decorah.

In their only previous meeting this season, Decorah held off a late run from Charles City to win, 47-40.
