CHARLES CITY — Bowling teams are similar to basketball teams in makeup and turn-around tendencies.

Both generally consist of five starters. And unlike other sports where there are 22 spots to be filled, bowling and basketball teams can go from middling to championship calibre with just a few changes.

The Charles City Press bowling team took a page out of the Miami Heat and Golden State Warriors’ playbook when publisher and anchorman Chris Hall recently surrounded himself with some reliable high rollers.

During the City Bowling Tournament that took course over a week before concluding Feb. 18 at Comet Bowl, the Charles City Press — consisting of Hall, Nick Kellogg, Zach Mitchell, Bernie Solomon and Brody Stone — won the team event with a score of 3,611, a few marks ahead of Hot Shots (3,574).

Hall and Kellogg also won the Doubles “B” Division title with a combined score of 1,288.

Jerry Mitchell and Charles City assistant bowling coach Tyler Mitchell won the Doubles “A” Division Doubles title (1,444).

Brad Cline won the Singles “A” Division title (773); Doug Chesnut won the Singles “B” Division title (698).

In All-Events, Dave Diercks won the “A” Division with a combined score of 2,174; Josh Althoff won the “B” Division (2,039).

In All-Events scratch, Tony “Doc” Slinger averaged 702 in his three series for a combined score of 2,106. Aaron Garden was 100 pins behind in second place.

Both bowlers have a history of high-rolling at Comet Bowl.

Slinger’s 841 series that he bowled nearly 20 years ago remains an all-time high at the house.

Last bowling season, Garden rolled three perfect 300 games in league play at Comet Bowl.
